Cross-flow fans offer unique opportunities for distributed propulsion and flow control due to their potential for spanwise integration in aircraft wings. The fan may be fully or partially embedded within the wing using a variety of possible configurations. Its inlet may be used to ingest the boundary-layer flow, and its high-energy exhaust flow may be injected into the wake at the wing trailing edge for drag reduction or vectored thrust. Cross-flow fans are high-pressure coefficient machines, so they can be diametrically compact. However, their efficiency is fundamentally limited by unavoidable recirculation flows within the impeller at all flight speeds, and by additional compressibility losses at high speeds. This article reviews the fundamental aerodynamics and flow regions of cross-flow fans using a simple mean-line analysis to examine the basic energy transfer and loss processes. Experimental data for fans intended for aircraft application are then reviewed and compared to calculations using unsteady Navier–Stokes methods, showing the state-of-the art in flow field and performance prediction capability. Alternative prediction methods where blade action is modeled in terms of body-force or vortex elements are discussed, including challenges in handling arbitrary non-uniform, unsteady blade flows for various design configurations. The article concludes with a review of cross-flow fan propulsion and flow control concepts that have been investigated by various researchers, and with discussions on future challenges in their application.  相似文献

This paper contains a summary of the topics treated in the working group on abundance variations in the solar atmosphere and in the solar wind. The FIP bias (overabundance of particles with low First Ionization Potentials over photospheric abundances) in coronal holes and coronal hole associated solar wind amounts to values between 1 and 2. The FIP bias in the slow solar wind is typically a factor 4, consistent with optical observations in streamers. In order to distinguish between different theoretical models which make an attempt to explain the FIP bias, some observable parameters must be provided. Unfortunately, many models are deficient in this respect. In addition to FIP fractionation, gravitational settling of heavy elements has been found in the core of long lived streamers. The so-called electron 'freeze in' temperatures derived from in situ observed ionization states of minor ions in the fast wind are significantly higher than the electron temperatures derived from diagnostic line ratios observed in polar coronal holes. The distinction between conditions in plumes and interplume lanes needs to be further investigated. The 'freeze in' temperatures for the slow solar wind are consistent with the electron temperatures derived for streamers. In previous papers, the authors developed an active control scheme based on the linear quadratic regulator (LQR) to maintain the separation distance constraints of the NASA benchmark tetrahedron constellation. Two different active control schemes were used to maintain the separation distance constraints, but one control scheme applied to every eccentricity of the NASA benchmark problem. Through this paper, the digital LQR strategy will be developed with this active control scheme to maintain the separation distance conditions of the tetrahedron constellation. The motion of a pair of satellites in an elliptical orbit about the Earth is defined by the linearized Tschauner–Hempel (TH) equations. These equations will be defined discretely in the true anomaly angle for the development of the digital control scheme. In summary, the digital LQR approach will be implemented and studied to determine how this active control scheme maintains the separation distance constraints for different specific sizes of the NASA benchmark tetrahedron constellation.  相似文献

In the present paper experimental aerodynamic investigations on an airship configuration at angle of attack with special emphasis on the hull-fin region are reported. In particular, visualizations of flow phenomena on both hull and fins are studied. The African Leadership Conference on Space Science and Technology (known as “the ALC”) is a regional conference to promote intra-African cooperation in the uses of space science and technology to support Africa’s development. The first such conference was held in 2005 in Abuja, Nigeria, followed by South Africa (2007), Algeria (2009) and Kenya (2011). The ALC has come to be regarded as a representative African forum in the global space community. This paper provides an overview of the structure and activities of the ALC and presents the highlights and outcomes of the first four conferences and their contribution to shaping the development of the African space arena. The paper concludes with an analysis of the challenges facing the ALC and some proposed measures to enhance its effectiveness.  相似文献

Over the past fifteen years, major U.S. initiatives for the development of new launch vehicles have been remarkably unsuccessful. The list is long: NLI, SLI, and X-33, not to mention several cancelled programs aimed at high speed airplanes (NASP, HSCT) which would share some similar technological problems.The economic aspects of these programs are equally as important to their success as are the technical aspects. In fact, by largely ignoring economic realities in the decisions to undertake these programs and in subsequent management decisions, space agencies (and their commercial partners) have inadvertently contributed to the eventual demise of these efforts.The transportation revolution that was envisaged by the promises of these programs has never occurred. Access to space is still very expensive; reliability of launch vehicles has remained constant over the years; and market demand has been relatively low, volatile and slow to develop. The changing international context of the industry (launching overcapacity, etc.) has also worked against the investment in new vehicles in the U.S. Today, unless there are unforeseen technical breakthroughs, orbital space access is likely to continue as it has been with high costs and market stagnation.Space exploration will require significant launching capabilities. The details of the future needs are not yet well defined. But, the question of the launch costs, the overall demand for vehicles, and the size and type of role that NASA will play in the overall launch market is likely to influence the industry. This paper will emphasize the lessons learned from the economic and management perspective from past launch programs, analyze the issues behind the demand for launches, and project the challenges that NASA will face as only one new customer in a very complex market situation. It will be important for NASA to make launch vehicle decisions based as much on economic considerations as it does on solving new technical challenges.  相似文献

BiSbTe3-mixed crystals have been grown at normal and reduced gravity (during the MIR'97-mission) using a -configuration of the TITUS facility. The distribution of the components in the melt, and so the homogeneity of the growing crystal, is strongly influenced by the flow in the melt even in the case of weak convection. The flow configuration in the melt especially in front of the solid-liquid phase boundary can be investigated by means of a segregation analysis of the system components and an additional Pb-dopant. The BiSbTe3-system is because of its hydro-dynamic properties a typical representative of semiconductor melts (low number, high number) but there are also some special properties relating to the segregationally caused enrichment of the lighter tellurium at the phase boundary and the resulting solutal destabilities. Experimental experiences from segregation analysis have shown that the mass transport in the melt at normal gravity is mainly influenced by convective mixing determined by thermally and solutally caused buoyancy forces. Numerical simulations have been performed for the real experimentally used configurations. These simulations have shown that a strong coupling of thermal and solutal effects exists and have given axial as well as radial segregation profiles being in excellent agreement with the experimental results for the vertical normal gravity grown crystals. For micro gravity conditions a reduction of the flow velocity of more than two orders of magnitude (depending on the micro gravity level and the direction of the residual acceleration) resulting in diffusion controlled component segregation has been predicted.The results of the two micro gravity grown crystals, especially the axial and radial segregation profiles as a sensitive indicator for the flow configuration in front of the phase boundary will be given and discussed in the paper. They will be compared with the results of numerical simulations of the melt flow for the real processing parameters measured during the TITUS growth processes and with experimental as well as numerical results for vertical normal gravity grown reference Samples.  相似文献
